The Journey Ahead

Updated: Mar 6, 2021

Happy New Year everyone, we are grateful to God that despite all the events that took place in 2020, we have reached 2021. As it is the first Sunday, of the first week, of the first month in 2021, we wrote this blog to encourage you as you navigate the journey ahead.

The journey ahead may look or even feel uncertain, especially after last year. Plans had to be changed, dreams may have had to be paused, but nonetheless God got us through a year that altered the world as we knew it. It is a common practice to write down plans as a new year approaches, plans of what you hope to achieve over the following year, plans of where you would like to travel or who you would like to see. Whilst plans can and are still being made, what do you do when you cannot see the journey ahead?

What happens when you can only envision the result and not see the journey to get there? You may want to graduate this year or start something new but don't quite see how it will be possible. How it will be attainable when lectures may still be online, jobs are few and dreams seem so far. What happens when you cannot even see the result of the journey? You may be working towards something and do not know where it will lead or what you will encounter along the way.

Have you ever sat in a vehicle, not knowing the directions or route but trusting that whoever is operating it or the satnav that may be guiding the way. In moments like these, we have the assurance that the destination will be reached because someone or something knows the way, even when we don't.

The book of Hebrews, chapter 11, shows us that faith is:

"the assurance that what we hope for will come about and the certainty that what we cannot see exists." Hebrews 11:1 (International Standard Version)

So even when we cannot see something, we should have the confidence that God is working. Through this chapter we are reminded of how faith was activated by individuals such as Noah, Sarah, Abraham and Moses. Hebrews 11: 8 (International Standard Version) reads:

"By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."

Abraham did not know where he was going but put his faith into action and made the journey. Earlier in the Bible in Genesis 12, God instructed Abraham to take his family and leave Haran. Even though Abraham did not know where he was going, he obeyed God's command and ultimately experienced the blessings God had in store for his life.

We do not know what this year will look like but we have the assurance that as we navigate this journey ahead, God is with us. Not only is He there with us, but He is able to do "exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think" Ephesians 3:20 (New King James Version). As you navigate the journey ahead we pray that God will direct your paths and lead you to the plans He has for you. We pray that you will have the faith and obedience to surrender to the will that God has placed upon your life.
