As the month of April draws to a cl0se, we could not let it end without adding a blog post. Whilst Easter was celebrated at the beginning of April, we thought it would be nice to end this month's blog with some reflections and reminders on Easter.
Easter is celebrated amongst Christians every year and focuses on the events leading up to, surrounding and following the resurrection of Jesus. Holy week which commences the week before Easter Sunday starts with Jesus' arrival to Jerusalem. For Palm Sunday we shared that this was the commemoration of Jesus' entrance to Jerusalem, whereby scriptures such as John 12:12-19 and Matthew 21:1-9 show us that when Jesus was approaching Jerusalem people in the crowds took palm branches and shouted "hosanna". The Hebrew expression of "hosanna" means "save". From expressions such as this there is a reminder of how much a saviour was needed and how much a saviour Jesus Christ was and still is today.
Following Palm Sunday, the Thursday focused on the Last Supper when Jesus and his disciples shared the Passover meal together. Bread and wine is used as a reminder of Jesus' sacrifice and scriptures such as Mark 14:22-25 and Luke 22:18-20 illustrate this.
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22:18-20 (New International version)
The following day, known as Good Friday, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. Across various scriptures we learn that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. In John 17:4, while Jesus is praying to God, He refers to completing the work that God had given him. A few chapters later in John 19:30 Jesus says his final words before dying, 'It is finished'. The Greek translation of this phrase is 'Tetelestai'. Knowing that Jesus endured so much so that we could experience grace, mercy, forgiveness and everlasting life is a wonderful reminder of the love that God has for each and everyone of us.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (New International Version)
When it all seemed to be over...on the third day Jesus rose. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Scriptures such as Luke 24 and Matthew 28 show us that when the tomb where Jesus laid was visited, the stone was rolled away and the tomb itself was empty; Jesus had risen. This reminds us that when God is in something there is no limit to what God can do. He will always exceed our expectations.
As we reflect on Easter and what it means, we are grateful for all that Jesus did for us all. We hope these reminders encourage you. If you have any questions please contact us and see the resources below.
